Autumn Comes...

It is becoming that time of year where nature's thoughts are turning to fall. The frost has not come, but the nights are cool enough that leaves are starting to turn colour and the rose hips are getting the translucency they always do when the cold comes.

Autumn is a good time of year with the temperatures during the day being "just right" and the outdoors calling for walks amongst the falling leaves. I always try to get outside as much as I can before the snow comes. Then it will be time to buckle down and work hard inside in my studio.

This year I am working on felted wool pieces all with the rose hip theme. Summer interrupted the work flow, but Autumn will bring it back. The direct connection with nature draws creativity out and I cannot stop the yearning to make things. Nor should I.

Pot of Gold

Today I am felting some wool for a new project... a piece that will hopefully travel to New Zealand in an exhibition collaboration by the Fibre Art Network. A great opportunity to have a portfolio piece travel afar.

When I am in my studio, things get a little piled up. I'm pretty sure if you ever found the end of the rainbow... this is what you would see.

The colours are so fun all piled up and it is too hard to make myself put everything away!

The Organizing Bug

Often before an anticipated busy part of life, I decide I need to be more organized so that I can keep afloat during the upcoming busy time. Ironically, by the time I'm finished prepping for the busy time, I have been so busy getting organized that the busy time is quite relaxed.

Next Friday, October 8th, I begin working on my Master in Fine Arts. I know it will be busy. So I have been re-organizing and making large messes by sorting, stacking, un-piling, re-piling, moving, cleaning and eventually throwing out. I know it will all come together by next Friday, but it seems impossible right at this very moment :-) You can see this below in my studio...

How do I keep a balance during my pre-busy busy time? My love of the outdoors and the walks I can take near my home relax my mind and get me away from it all. That as well as a really good book.... actually three, that I leave lying around for those spur-of-the-moment drop-on-the-couch-and-read opportunities.

Needless to say, I am looking forward to defeating the organization bug, so I can be un-busier than I am.

Welcome to my Studio! Come right in...

Hi there,

Welcome to my Studio! I'm excited to share my creative space. It is nothing fancy, but it is all my own. I did tidy a little before I took pictures, but most of my things are within sight for inspiration.

This is the main view of my studio as I walk in. to the right, I have a lovely, large light table/work surface where I spend most of my time working.

This is a close-up of my wall that I use to put quilts in process. I love colour and this way I get lots of it... and I don't forget about the projects either!

This is the set of shelves (from IKEA) that divide my room from the rest of the family room. I do have a family and they are very supportive of my space and time. I keep some of my stash here (more colour!), all of my creativity-related books and of course my Studio and Quilting Arts Magazines.

This is the other end of my studio. Some more shelves, my little bulletin board of inspirational writing and some of my children's art work. My daughter is 20 and my son is 18.

Some of the artwork is from when they were in elementary school!

However, this series of paintings was made by my daughter for a Christmas present for me last year :-)

The question of the week... Should I clean up my studio for pictures that I post on Saturday? Or should I just leave it messy like it usually is :-)

Summer is Still Here!

Back from two months of holidays and fence building. Not a lot of studio time (read none), but lots of time out for thinking and idea gathering. I'm off to a FAN (Fibre Art Network) quilt retreat at the end of October, so I will be busy preparing for this as well as working on my first quilt series.

For the retreat, I have to make a mask for the mask challenge, some art trading cards and create some kind of Halloween costume.

For the series, I need to create 10 to 15 quilts with a similar theme by January, so that I can start sending out packages to galleries.

I'm looking forward to both!
